Passenger vehicles (PVs) posted its highest-ever wholesales (sales or dispatches to dealers) of January of 3.99 lakh units, with a growth of 1.6 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) as compared with 3,93,074 units in January 2024, mainly led by utility vehicle (UVs) sales that grew by six per cent y-o-y to 2,12,995 units during the month as compared with 2,00,917 units in the corresponding month last year.
During the month, while companies such as Maruti Suzuki India, Mahindra & Mahindra, Kia India and Toyota Kirloskar Motor had reported growth in their sales, while companies like Hyundai Motor India, Tata Motors, Honda Cars India, Renault India and Skoda Auto India reported decline in sales, the latest monthly data shared by Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) said on Thursday.
In the two-wheeler segment, the data indicated total two-wheeler sales grew by 2.1 per cent y-o-y to 15,26,218 units during the month as compared with 14,95,183 units in January 2024.
Scooter sales
The scooter sales grew by 12.4 per cent y-o-y to 5,48,201 in January as against 4,87,534 units in the same month last year. However, the motorcycle sales declined by 3.1 per cent y-o-y to 9,36,145 units as compared with 9,65,613 units in January 2024.
Major companies including Hero Motocorp and India Yamaha Motor reported y-o-y decline in their sales, manufacturers including Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India, Suzuki Motorcycle India and TVS Motor Company reported growth in their yearly sales during the month.
“PVs posted its highest ever sales of January in 2025 of 3.99 lakh units, with a growth of 1.6 per cent as compared to January 2024. The recent Union Budget announcements prioritising long-term economic growth and particularly the personal income tax changes and reduction in interest rates by the RBI would help in boosting consumer confidence and drive demand in the auto industry,” Rajesh Menon, Director General, SIAM, said.
Three-wheelers sales grew by 7.7 per cent y-o-y to 58,167 units during the month as compared with 53,991 units in January of previous year, the SIAM data indicated.
The grand total of all categories of vehicles grew by 2.1 per cent y-o-y to 19,83,771 units during the month as compared with 19,42,248 units in January 2024.
