Thank God! There is someone else out there. Thank you for sharing, Jazz Charton (“Confessions of a CD and DVD hoarder”, House & Home, FT Weekend, January 11)!

I still remember the thrill of seeing a shiny small metal disc being introduced on Tomorrow’s World in the late 1980s, and being told that it could store the entire Encyclopedia Britannica. That sense of awe still affects me.

I collect CDs, mainly classical music, because I like them. Each one comes with physical artwork and liner notes (not immediately available on streaming platforms). The act of buying a CD reflects a commitment on my part to listen to it while paying something in return to the artist for their work. Which feels a little more honest and less ephemeral than surfing the music on a streaming platform.
