GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL) commissioned Category II Instrument Landing System (ILS) and associated runway lighting system on the primary runway.

“The implementation of these advanced navigational systems represents a significant milestone in GMR Hyderabad International Airports’s technological infrastructure development. This enhancement substantially elevates our operational parameters while ensuring adherence to the highest safety standards in aviation operations,’‘ Pradeep Panicker, CEO, GHIAL said in a release.

The new system helps in reducing disruptions during low visibility leading to inconvenience to passengers and enhancing operational safety.

The upgrades comply with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) specifications and have received all necessary certifications from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

It enables aircraft to safely land in challenging visibility conditions as low as 300 meters (RVR). Category II ILS represents a significant upgrade from Category I systems, providing pilots with more precise guidance through a combination of highly accurate radio signals and advanced ground lighting systems. The enhanced capability is crucial during adverse weather conditions, particularly in fog or when visual references are severely limited below CAT I conditions.

GHIAL has also received approval from DGCA to upgrade the status of secondary runway to CAT I, which will enhance its operational capabilities to operate up to RVR of 550 Meter during any contingency on the main runway.
