Who is releasing the GDP numbers and when?
National Statistics Office (NSO) will release the annual GDP numbers for FY2024-25 along with the quarterly GDP estimates for the October-December quarter of FY2024-25. The data would be released on 28 February 2025.
Why is this important?
The GDP growth rate in the first quarter of FY2024-25 was at 6.7%. However, this number shockingly dropped to 5.4% in the second quarter. With the speculations of a slowdown and debates around whether such ‘slowdown’ is systemic or cyclical, the expectations around the GDP numbers for the third quarter have created a greater anticipation as it might give a clearer picture. In the previous financial year FY2023-24, the annual growth rate of GDP was at 8.2% (provisional). The annual projections for FY2024-25 as per the NSO’s estimates in January pegs the growth rate at 6.4% which by itself is a 4-year low. With the second quarter of the ongoing financial year dampening the mood with a 5.4% growth, a weaker GDP growth in third quarter could be an imepetes for missing 6.4% annual growth projection for the current financial year.
