Trump impact
This refers to the news report ‘How to neutralise Trump’s tariffs’ (February 7). The author has put forth very valuable points on Understand, Prepare and Respond in facing the tariff challenges imposed by Trump. Trump has the habit of coming out with statements with irrelevant statistical data which hints at a lack of preparation and consultation.
While Trump’s actions are causing concern in Europe and Asia and also violates WTO rules , India needs to tread cautiously in negotiating on trade issues without disturbing the health of domestic manufacturing.
China has aggressively issued a statement against Trump’s announcements and is ready to fight till the end of any type of war. India can voluntarily drop the Most Favoured Nation status which would not help in protecting the domestic industries in the long run as this may become dormant once there is change of power.
The ongoing tariff tussle may have bring setbacks on the goal of achieving Atmanirbhartha in the economy.

Depression looms
It refers to the Editorial ‘Spectre of depression’. The unpredictable Donald Trump has put global markets on the edge by setting the stage for the devastating trade war.
With countries not backing off and readying for their import taxes in retaliation, it is bound to escalate tensions and increase economic pain. Trump has been relentlessly pursuing his MAGA ambition and tariffs have been imposed in the garb of illegal immigration and drug trafficking, but tariffs may be short lived as the US economy can also suffer due to these measures and inflationary pressure would be felt by US consumers.
