Thank you for the excellent summary of the consequences for Europe if the US “switches off its weapons” (Report, March 11). As the article makes clear, only one European power has maintained an independent strategic military capacity: France. It has one of the biggest armed forces, the biggest arsenal and, unlike the British, the only nuclear weapon capacity that doesn’t rely on US munition and maintenance. The shade of Charles de Gaulle is hovering over the scene. I’m no francophone, but there must be a Gallic equivalent to “I told you so”.
