After advocating 90-hr work week, L&T boss announces one-day menstrual leave

Indian conglomerate Larsen & Toubro’s chairperson SN Subrahmanyan has announced one-day menstrual leave for its women employees, who make up 9 per cent of the engineering and construction company’s 60,000-strong workforce.

The announcement of one day of menstrual leave was made by him in an event for celebrating Women’s Day. “This is a huge progressive step and an industry first,” a statement by the company claimed.

It is estimated that this will benefit approximately 5000 women employees.

This pro-employee move comes less than two months after Subrahmanyan was trolled and panned for asking L&T’s employees to work 90 hours a week and expressed his regret on not being able to make people work on Sundays in an employee interaction. The video of the interaction had gone viral.

“I regret that I’m not able to make you work on Sundays. If I can make you work on Sundays, I will be happier because I work. What do you do sitting at home? “How long can you stare at your wife and wife stare at the husband? Get into the office and start working,” he had said.
