An Irish football fan spies a Brexit dividend

I had to smile when I read the FT report (February 25) stating that Irish citizenship applications from Britain have hit a post-Brexit peak at over 23,000 in 2024. Data from the UK’s Office for National Statistics shows almost 160,000 UK citizens living in England and Wales now also hold an Irish passport; this is six times the pre-Brexit number of 26,000.

As a long-suffering Republic of Ireland football fan, it would be great if a few of these newly-minted Irish citizens could kick a ball. Come on ye British boys in green!
