At last Canada is included with the EU in your call to prepare “for the real possibility that Donald Trump could cut off military support to Ukraine, leaving Kyiv and its non-US allies on their own” (FT View, March 4).
After the dishonourable but revealing Oval Office meeting last Friday, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy should be in little doubt who he’s dealing with: an American administration that supports Russia in the Russia-Ukraine war. Given this, Ukraine should not sign a minerals deal with the US under any circumstances. Even with security guarantees, which the administration is not willing to provide as part of the agreement, there is no assurance the US would live up to them. Instead, Ukraine should sign a minerals deal with Canada — Canadians are experts in mining and, most importantly, have integrity. Canada should forge closer ties in every way with the EU, especially now given the “pause” in US military support for Ukraine and the tariffs Trump has imposed on Canada.
Trump can walk away from Ukraine. Ukraine can walk away from Trump.
