Coimbatore to host 2-day meet on improving quality of South Indian teas

Aimed at increasing consumer awareness on quality of South Indian teas, stakeholders in the sector are organising a convention on March 7 and 8 at Coimbatore.

The theme of the 2-day convention is “Increasing Consumer Awareness on Quality of South Indian Teas” which will be held at Jenney’s Residency, Coimbatore.

Tea Board jointly with Tea Trade Association of Coimbatore, United Planters Association of Southern India, Federation of All India Tea Traders Association and Tea Trade Association of Cochin are hosting the convention. Large Tea packeteers from the country, leading tea manufacturers, sellers and buyers across the country would participate.  

The convention will feature sessions, tea tasting, selection of teas for the Golden Leaf India Awards, Buyer-Seller meet and exhibitions showcasing the improved quality profile of the South Indian Teas. Road shows will be organised coinciding the event towards generating consumer awareness on quality of South Indian teas, said Dipak Shah, chairman of South India Tea Exporters Association.

Anil George Joseph, vice chairman, Tea Trade Association of Cochin said south Indian tea is well positioned to thrive in domestic and overseas markets with its exceptional quality, 100 per cent MRL compliance, ethical sourcing, traceability and a rich heritage.

Despite being strong, traditional markets such as Russia, Iran, and the Middle East are facing some trade challenges. At the same time, newer markets like Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia are also offering growing demand for premium teas.

The focus is now for a strategic growth by targeting premium markets such as US, Japan, Europe where there is high demand for orthodox and speciality teas. The upcoming convention will catalyse collaboration, innovation, and industry-wide action, ensuring South Indian tea strengthens its place as a global leader in quality and sustainability, he added.
