The construction work of Tata Group’s semiconductor fabrication facility at Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR) in Gujarat is estimated to be completed by the second quarter of financial year 2027-28, Gujarat government informed the state legislature, Friday.
“The construction of a unit of M/s Tata Semiconductor Manufacturing Pvt Ltd is underway and it is estimated to be completed in the second quarter of 2027-28,” the State government said in a written reply to a query raised during the Question Hour. N Chandrasekaran, chairman, Tata Sons, had announced Tata Group’s decision to build a semiconductor fab at Dholera at the Vibrant Gujarat Summit in January 2024. Tata Electronics, a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Sons Pvt Ltd, is building India’s first AI-enabled fabrication unit in partnership with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) with a total investment of ₹91,000 crore.
While speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony of the Tata unit at Dholera in March 2024, Union Minister for electronics and information technology Ashwani Vaishnaw predicted that the first chip from Dholera unit will be out by December 2026. On Friday, the Gujarat government also told the House that a total of 21 MoUs have been inked for setting up industries in Dholera SIR. These MoUs include agreements with Dholera Industrial City Development Ltd, Dholera International Airport Company Ltd, National Highway Authority of India and Torrent Power Ltd among others.
The government also said that the project of Tata Chemicals to set up a unit at Dholera has been dropped as the project was transferred to Tata Motors and now a bigger unit is being built at Sanand, near Ahmedabad. Tata Chemicals had earlier planned to set up a Lithium-ion battery unit at Dholera SIR.
Vibrant Gujarat 2024 investments
Meanwhile, in another set of written replies, Gujarat government on Friday told the House that during the 10th edition of Vibrant Gujarat Summit held in January 2024, the State had so far attracted over ₹6.95 lakh crore of investments. “Over 98,900 Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) were signed across 26 sectors during the last edition of Vibrant Gujarat Summit,” a written reply stated during the Question Hour. Among these, 21,700 MoUs were related to large projects, while 77,000 MoUs were with MSME units. Of the total MoUs signed, 56,500 projects have already been implemented, 13,700 are under various stages of implementation and 5,000 projects have been cancelled or dropped, the reply added.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the summit, where the heads of UAE, Czech Republic, Timor Leste and Mozambique had remained present.
