Although I have been living in Europe for a long time, I am still using top sheets for the following reasons.
First of all, it is neither easy putting a cover on a duvet or taking it off. The main advantage with a top sheet is not foremost hygiene, but rather flexibility.
If it gets cooler, you can easily add a blanket or duvet, and more importantly, with the increase in global warming, you can easily discard a blanket or duvet without having to lie naked on your bed or sweat under a heavy duvet (“For tuck’s sake: the tyranny of the top sheet”, House & Home, FT Weekend, March 29).
