The partnership aims to combine Accelera’s expertise in new energy businesses with GAIL’s established natural gas infrastructure to explore opportunities in hydrogen production, blending, transportation, and storage. This collaboration follows GAIL’s recent advancement of its “Net Zero” targets for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions from 2040 to 2035.
GAIL has already made significant progress in clean energy initiatives, having commissioned a 10 MW Green Hydrogen unit at its Vijaipur plant in April 2024, which uses Accelera-made electrolysers. The company has also conducted pilot studies in hydrogen blending, with tests of 2 per cent hydrogen in CNG/PNG networks in Indore, later increased to 5 per cent in PNG networks.
The MoU will explore applications of hydrogen across various sectors including transport, power, and steel industries, as well as infrastructure development for hydrogen production and storage. This partnership represents another step in GAIL’s ongoing energy transition efforts, which include biogas plants and joint ventures for ethanol and synthetic natural gas production.
