Godrej Consumer Products inaugurates its manufacturing plant near Chennai

Godrej Consumer Products Ltd (GCPL) on Monday inaugurated its first integrated greenfield manufacturing plant at Chengalpattu district in Tamil Nadu with an investment of ₹515 crore and employing over 1,000 (both direct and indirect) persons. This is the single largest investment made by the company to boost its production capabilities.

It will manufacture a range of products, including Cinthol soap and Goodknight mosquito repellent, at the plant.

Inaugurated by Chief Minister MK Stalin, in the presence of Nadir Godrej, Chairperson, Godrej Industries Group, the factory will manufacture FMCG, multi-product lines, soaps, creams, and mosquito repellent in the 27-acre facility inside CapitaLand OneHub Chennai, an industrial township about 50 km south of Chennai near Mamallapuram.

The plant officially commenced operations with the ceremonial activation of the production line by Chief Minister Stalin. This resulted in the rollout of the inaugural Cinthol Original soap bar.

Godrej joins the list of other FMCG companies like Brittania, Dabur and ITC to have production facility in the State, said Stalin in his speech. Your investment will help the State in attracting more investment, he added.

On August 10, 2023, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the State government and the 127-year- old household brand Godrej Group at the Secretariat. The factory was established in 13 months, said Nadhir Godrej.

At least 50 per cent of the employees will be women, and at least 5 per cent from LGBTQI communities and people with disabilities, he said.

This is the 31st factory for the company, said Sudhir Sitapati, MD & CEO, GCPL. The next plant is coming up at Gwalior, he added.

Industries Minister TRB Rajaa said, the company will make the products in Tamil Nadu for the world. Godrej is special for the State with the factory coming up in 13 months, he said.
