Government is in touch with social media platform X over the AI chatbot Grok using Hindi slang and invective, and will be “examining the issue”, sources said.

Sources in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) told businessline that it will look into the use of abusive language by Grok.

Sources said that action should also be taken against the person who is instigating such searches in AI.

“Right now we have not formally sent any notice to them (to X). We are interacting with them to understand what is going on…we will have to examine at what stage it violates the Indian laws and what stage does it specifically violates and in which Indian law it violates,” said one of the sources.

Grok, the AI chatbot on Elon Musk’s X, shocked netizens recently when its response in Hindi came loaded with abuses and slang.

The banter started when an X user requested that Grok provide a list of the “10 best mutuals”. After a silence, the user responded with some harsh comments. This prompted Grok to retaliate with an equally casual tone and slur-loaded response.

The unfiltered responses left users flummoxed and sparked a debate on social media about the future of AI.

Interestingly, when asking Grok platform itself about whether it was true that the Indian government wanted to take action against it, it responded saying, “Yes, it is true that the Indian government is scrutinising Grok, the AI chatbot developed by X AI, and engaging with X regarding its operations, though no formal action like a ban has been confirmed as of March 20, 2025.”

“The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is actively investigating Grok due to concerns raised by its behaviour, but the government has stated it has not issued any formal notices to Grok or X yet. Instead, it is in discussions with X to understand the issues and determine if any laws have been violated,” it added.
