HMEL inks MoUs with Emerson, AVEVA for automation in refinery and petrochemicals

HPCL-Mittal Energy (HMEL) on Wednesday signed two memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with automation giants Emerson and AVEVA during the ongoing India Energy Week 2025 in New Delhi.

The partnerships are aimed to augment HMEL’s digital technology adaptation to wider refinery and petrochemical process units by implementing disrupting technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Advance Analytics, Real Time Optimiser to improve process efficiency, safety and sustainability.

HMEL is a joint venture (JV) between state-run Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL) and Mittal Energy Investment.

Prabh Das, MD & CEO of HMEL, said, “Process automation has been at the heart of HMEL’s strategic vision for building a smart enterprise. We are thrilled to partner with Emerson and AVEVA to develop innovative automation solutions that will boost digital transformation at HMEL.”

HMEL is a digital-first organisation, operating one of the most modern integrated refinery-petrochemical complex, Guru Gobind Singh Refinery’ at Bathinda (Punjab).

The refinery constitutes of an 11.3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) crude oil refinery and a 1.2 MTPA multi-feed cracker along with 1.2 MMTPA Polyethylene (PE) and 1 MMTPA Polypropylene (PP) Plants.

Leveraging the latest technology and partnering with the best of the partners has enabled HMEL to deliver stellar operational performance and profitability with strict adherence to safety and environmental standards.

The partnership with AVEVA would focus on developing Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digitalisation solution for smart refining & petrochemical operations at HMEL.

Ajit Kulkarni, VP-India at AVEVA, said, “By combining AVEVA’s advanced digital solutions with HMEL’s operational expertise, we aim to drive measurable improvements in energy efficiency, sustainability, and optimise resource utilisation.”

There is also a plan of establishing a Centre of Excellence along with AVEVA for analytics-driven refinery transformation as well as driving long-term co-innovation initiatives.

Besides, the MoU with the global automation leader, Emerson has been signed on co-development of innovative solution for Energy Value chain Optimisation including optimisation of the Oils to Chemicals supply chain for improving margins through real-time industrial data platform for enterprise-wide integration and visualisation.
