The Ministry of Defence (MoD) on Monday signed a contract with Bengaluru-based public sector undertaking (PSU) Bharat Electronics Ltd for the acquisition of Electronic Warfare (EW) Suites and aircraft modification kits as well as their installation on Mi-17 V5 helicopters, along with associated equipment, for the Indian Air Force (IAF) at an overall cost of ₹2,385.36 crore.
This state-of-the-art EW Suite will considerably enhance operational survivability of the helicopters in hostile environment, the MoD informed. The IAF operates 151 Mi-17 V5 copters purchased from Russia from 2008 to 2013, with the first lot was for 80 of them.
The Suite for Mi-17 V5 is a significant leap forward in developing indigenous EW capabilities, making the country Aatmanirbhar in consonance with the Make-in-India initiative, the Ministry observed.
