National Seeds Corporation (NSC), a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Agriculture, has reported a record seeds sales of ₹1,141.95 crore during FY2024-25, up by 14 per cent from ₹1,005.25 crore in 2023-24, mainly due to a robust increase during Rabi season. The company has set a target to achieve ₹1,550 crore of turnover from seeds business this fiscal.
In Rabi 2024-25, the seeds sales were about ₹684 crore as against ₹555 crore in Rabi 2023-24, up by 23 per cent, company sources said. However, the sales in Kharif 2024-25 were ₹457.48 crore against ₹450.70 crore in the year-ago period.
Gujarat continues its lead in the sales of seeds by NSC, reporting ₹227.55 crore business last fiscal, which is 82 per cent higher than ₹124.71 crore in 2023-24. West Bengal regional office, which also cater to the north-eastern States and Odisha, has reported a business of ₹121.50 crore, up from ₹107.38 crore.
It is closely followed by Rajasthan where ₹116.46 crore of sales reported, down by 42 per cent from over ₹201 crore in 2023-24. Sources said that the sales were higher in 2023-24 due to higher order placed by the State government.
Wheat, pulses and oilseeds are the key areas where maximum sales are happening, whereas some new areas that showed growth last year included exotic vegetables and flowers, said a source in NSC.
“Last year, we decided to process unsold seeds to produce food products and market through our own network since the final products are of better quality, compared to those processed from normal crops, having a premium in the market” the source said.
The company in February had paid ₹35.30 crore dividend for the financial year 2023-24 to Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, which is the highest ever dividend.
NSC, a ‘B’-Mini Ratna Category-I company, has reported a revenue (from operations) of ₹1,143.26 crore, including ₹1,005 crore from sales of seeds in FY24, up from ₹1,078.23 crore in the previous year. The company’s net profit surged 38 per cent to ₹73.64 crore, the agriculture ministry had said.
