No headwinds on Adani’s 5G private networks, no services operational yet in India

New Delhi

With Adani Group not launching 5G services in the country, even after buying the spectrum for almost three years, the private networks which it was supposed to launch in the country, has no headwinds yet.

According to sources in the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) it has sent notices to Adani Data Networks, the subsidiary of Adani Group for launching 5G services, but the department has not gotten anything on the same.

“There is no such service being operational at the moment,” sources at DoT said. businessline also sent questions to Adani Group but did not receive response till the time of press.

According to sources, the group was even planning to surrender the 5G spectrum that it bought from the 2022 spectrum auctions. However, neither DoT officials nor the company has yet confirmed to that too.

In the July 2022 auctions, Adani Data Networks had bought 400 MHz of 5G spectrum in the 26 GHz band worth ₹212 crore that included 100 MHz each in Gujarat and Mumbai, and 50 MHz each in Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.

The group, through this high-end spectrum wanted to deploy captive private networks for its businesses across ports, airports, power generation, and logistics. However, now, it feels that the same is not commercially viable any more.

A private network is a secure network that is separate from the public internet, which is connected in a limited number of devices and limited area. It can connect only to the authorised devices stationed in that particular area, and do not allow outside network to interfere and vice-versa.

These networks allow businesses to have more control over their data and network management, and can be also tailored to meet the needs of their specific environments, such as factories and warehouses.

For instance, it can be deployed in a car manufacturing facility that is spread over 100 of acres, and put to specific requirements which are specific business needs and secure too.
