Patent applications from India more than doubled in a decade: WIPO

Intellectual Property filings in India have surged – patent applications more than doubled in a decade, trademarks increased 2.5 fold, and design filings grew over threefold, demonstrating the nation’s growing commitment to innovations, according to David Muls, Senior Director (Madrid Registry) of World Intellectual Property Organisation.

Addressing a seminar on the Patent Cooperation Treaty and Madrid System here on Monday, he said that India was at the heart of the evolving innovation landscape, ranking 39th in the 2024 Global Innovation Index and leading in Central and Southern Asia.

The Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks (CGPDTM), Union Ministry of Commerce & Industry, WIPO organised the daylong seminar at the Dr Marri Channa Reddy Human Resources Development Institute.

Industry leaders, start-ups, innovators, researchers, and policy makers discussed the ever-evolving landscape of patents and international intellectual property protection.

Shashank Goel, Director-General of Dr MCR HRD Institute, said that India had witnessed an unprecedented rise in patent filings, reflecting the growing emphasis on research, development and technological advancements.

“Intellectual property is the backbone of a knowledge-driven economy, and this platform will help innovators, start-ups, and businesses understand the strategic advantages of filing patents under the PCT route,” he said.

“Through initiatives like digitisation of patent filings, expedited examination for start-ups, and reduced filing fees for MSMEs, the Intellectual Property Office (IPO), under the CGPDTM, is making the patent process more accessible and efficient. These reforms have significantly contributed to India’s rising global position in patent filings,” he pointed out.
