Pick of BL commodities – February 16, 2025

1. Andhra Pradesh has confirmed avian influenza (bird flu) on the heels of Jharkhand culling 3,500 birds earlier this week. It has led to a fall in prices in some parts of the country.

2.  A decline in the import of palm oil led to a 15.46 per cent drop in the total import of edible oils in January 2025. India imported 2.75 lt of palm oil in January 2025 against 7.80 lt in January 2024. This import figure was the lowest in January in the last 13 years.

3. The Indian government’s decision to increase the quantity of wheat offered under the weekly open market sales from 1.5 lakh tonnes (lt) to lt has eased the grain’s wholesale prices over the past 10 days. However, they are still above the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of ₹2,425/quintal for the current season.

4. An official of Tanzania’s Agriculture Ministry has said there are about one lakh hectares of area reserved for allowing farming through foreign direct investment. Indian entrepreneurs can consider it as Chinese companies present in the African country are eyeing to expand their presence.

5. Shivam Mittal, a young entrepreneur from Punjab has become the first exporter from India to send a consignment of coated popcorn under the brand ‘Corn Troopers’ to South Korea. The first consignment was flagged off on January 22 from Dappar (Punjab) inland container depot (ICD) and loaded onto the vessel on January 30. It is expected to reach Port of Busan this month.
