PM Modi, President Trump to discuss oil and gas sourcing: Oil Minister Puri

Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri said on Monday that sourcing of oil and gas from the US will be part of the agenda of the scheduled meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump.

Besides, Indian oil and gas companies such as State-run entities GAIL, Indian Oil Corporation (IoCL) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) are already in talks with the US for sourcing liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies.

“We are already buying $20 billion worth of energy from the US. I will be surprised if sourcing of energy from the US does not figure in the talks. It is something that is in the natural (course of) discussion. With President Trump saying that global crude oil prices come down and he wants more energy to come to the market. It is a positive development for India,” the Minister said.

Terming PM Modi’s visit as “important”, Puri said that this precedes the visit of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

Last month, the Minister had said that there is “more potential” of purchasing oil and gas from the US.

“Our relationship with the US is very broad based and strong. You can expect very positive discussions there,” he added.

Meanwhile, Oil Secretary Pankaj Jain said that Indian companies are in talks with the US companies for “additional” sourcing of LNG.

On the sidelines of the Indian Energy Week (IEW) 2025, Jain said companies will discuss gas sourcing with the US suppliers and will also explore the option of acquiring stakes in US LNG projects, if the “deal is attractive”.

Jain emphasised that there is a “case” for increasing oil and gas supplies from the US.
