Strike at Samsung Chennai to continue as talks fail

The strike by CITU-backed Samsung India Thozhilalargal Sangam at Samsung India’s plant in Sriperumbudur will continue as talks to end the two-week long impasse remained inconclusive on Monday. The talks between Samsung and CITU leaders were held in the presence of Additional Commissioner of the labour department.

Sources said Samsung officials were not willing to accept the Sangam’s demand of revoking the suspension of 17 employees. Two weeks ago, the orders were first given to three workers for leading a group of workers to barge into senior company officials’ cabins without permission. Last week, the company gave the orders to another 16 workers on the same issue.

‘No inquiry’

CITU leaders said the company did not follow the protocol and gave the suspension orders without giving a show-cause notice and holding an enquiry. The management is also trying to sabotage the newly registered Samsung Indian Thozhilarlargal Sangam, they claimed.

The plant at Sunguvarchatram in Sriperumbudur Industrial Park mainly manufactures consumer appliances like washing machines and air conditioners, and certain components for supply to the company’s Noida plant. There are over 1,800 employees at the facility. While over 1,000 are participating in the strike, the company has brought in over 2,000 casual labourers, said the striking workers.

On Friday, workers of various industrial units having CITU-backed union showed their support to striking workers of Samsung by participating in protests at various places in Oragadam, Irungattukottai and Sriperumbudur.

Meanwhile, the CITU leader E Muthukumar said on Tuesday morning, Sangam workers will protest at Sriperumbudur Industrial Food and Safety department, urging the company to revoke the suspension orders.
