What I like to call the “How To Tariff It Edition” of the FT sold out in Rome, where I live. A silver lining to the drama unfolding on the White House lawn was the elevation of FT Weekend to the top of the pantheon of papers at my local edicola (news kiosk).
Normally it is relegated to a dark corner, down behind the newsstand operator, and can only be obtained upon request.
However, early in the morning on Saturday April 5, I was amazed to find the distinctive pink-coloured paper pinned at eye level, just off the central window, the kiosk’s most valuable piece of newspaper real estate.
I asked in jest if it was being offered at a reduced price and the operator smiled and said: “No, per i dazi.” No, it was “because of the tariffs” he thought the FT should be featured. He handed me the one on display — the last copy.
