Auto and pharma indices dipped about 2 per cent, dragging the broader index. Nifty 50 declined by 137.65 pts or 0.6 per cent to 22,775.50, and Sensex tumbled 470.21 pts or 0.62 per cent to 75,265.75 as at 1.06 pm.
Top gainers
Shares of Hindalco, Tata Steel, L&T, Eicher Motors, and HCL Technologies emerged among top performers of Nifty 50 constituents. Meanwhile, stocks of Mahindra & Mahindra, Wipro, BPCL, Tata Motors and Adani Ports depreciated.
IT, auto and pharma stocks faced selling pressure, while metals and infrastructure stocks witnessed strong buying interest.
Hindalco shares lead the gainers among Nifty 50 pack in mid-day trading session, climbing 2.53 per cent to trade at ₹654.95. Tata Steel followed closely, registering a 2.17 per cent increase to ₹141.04.
Larsen & Toubro (LT) gained 1.36 per cent to trade at ₹3320.4. In addition, Eicher Motors and HCL Tech added to the positive sentiment with respective gains of 1.12 per cent and 0.86 per cent, trading at ₹4,943.05 and ₹1,702 on the NSE.
Top losers
Among the laggards, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) led the list with 5.69 per cent drop to ₹2677.75. Wipro also faced selling pressure, declining 2.30 per cent to ₹306.1, followed by BPCL which fell 2.17 per cent to ₹253. Tata Motors stock dragged 2.08 per cent to ₹675.45, and Adani Ports fell 1.81 per cent to ₹1,091.55.
On the BSE, Godrej Industries, JSW Infra, and JSW Energy stocks gained, while Cyient, IPCA Lab, Muthoot Finance traded among negative territory.
