Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin has assured the film industry that he will consider its request for an exemption from state entertainment tax.
Speaking at FICCI’s Media and Entertainment Business Conclave (MEBC) – South Connect, he responded to veteran actor and Chief Mentor of FICCI MEBC, Kamal Haasan, who requested relief from the state tax on cinema.
“We need to relook and reform the state entertainment tax on cinema. The burden of double taxation is a growing concern,” said Kamal Haasan. He stated that cinema should be accessible to young, talented newcomers and that financial barriers should not discourage independent filmmakers.
“We must support smaller cinemas and the industry as a whole. I was against GST from the beginning, and now we are facing double taxation. The industry must thrive for all of us to sustain. I am putting this request forward on behalf of the entire film industry.

In response, Udhayanidhi Stalin said: “I fully understand the importance of this issue, Sir. I assure you that I will bring it to the attention of our Chief Minister. A thorough legal and procedural review will be conducted, and I am confident that a positive announcement will be made by the Chief Minister soon.
He also highlighted the state government’s recent decision regarding the land allocated for a film industry housing project. Over a decade ago, the Tamil Nadu government had leased a 90-acre plot near Kelambakkam for 99 years to various film industry associations for the construction of a multi-story residential complex. However, the project remained incomplete, rendering the Government Order (GO) invalid.
“Understanding the industry’s concerns, our Chief Minister has revised the order, allowing the land to be used for residential construction. I am pleased to announce that the revised order has been issued,” Stalin stated.
He further pointed out that Tamil Nadu is rapidly emerging as a global hub for post-production, animation, gaming, AR, VR, and VFX, backed by a skilled workforce, competitive costs, and industry-friendly policies.
“Our government is committed to working closely with industry stakeholders to develop solutions that protect intellectual property, uphold ethical standards, and foster creativity within a responsible framework,” he said.
