I read with interest your “Tinted Truths” article (House & Home, February 22) on the revival of stained glass designs in home decor. The piece credits 19th century British artists Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris with reintroducing a love of stained glass to Victorian society.
Crossing the Atlantic, we ought to extend credit to New York-based decorative artist Louis Comfort Tiffany. Most famous for his exquisite Tiffany lamps, the American also created other objets d’art including elaborate stained glass windows; notably his magnificent “Four Seasons” panel, for which he was awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre National de la Légion d’honneur at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris.
Lest we overlook the tremendous amount of work involved in these creations, the novel The Tiffany Girls by Shelley Noble is an excellent “window” on the lives of Tiffany’s female employees — many of whom were artists in their own right — who spent painstaking hours in his workshop cutting and fitting individual glass pieces for his creations.
